The Crown & Pride Orbits
People keep asking how a Sekarri pride actually works day to day. Who is close to who? Who is in charge? Here is the full picture.
The Shape of a Pride
Sekarri births run seven females to every male, so a typical pride is one male and seven females. The seven are not all equally close to him. They usually break down like this:
- Velara (usually 2) — the closest to the male romantically. This is the real love triangle of a pride.
- Lorena (usually 3) — the middle ground. They have varying degrees of relations with the male, but are more enriched by love of the group, and sometimes a more intimate love with each other.
- Astraria (usually 2) — the furthest out. Often away by duty or by choice, and sometimes floating between prides.
The Cordara
Within the Velara, one woman (two at most, but usually one) is the male's single closest love. The Sekarri word for her is the Cordara — “Heart-bound”.
Dating a Pride
Pride Love
Above all, the eight members relate most to the group love they share with each other. Affection runs between everyone — female to female, male to female. When a pride cooks together they will share kisses and hugs as they go. On special occasions the male may be shared with the outer females, if they all wish it, but mostly it is a constant kind of pride love where everyone is affectionate with each other anyway.
Festive occasions are common. The classic one: the Astraria comes home, and all eight cook dinner together.
The Crown
The Crown is the centre of the pride — the one responsible for its stability. She is usually a female. It can be the male; that is just rarer. In the olden days the Crown was thought of as a kind of modern Alpha-Female.
- Legal head. She signs the formal documents, house deeds and so on.
- Often close to the male, but not always. Many Crowns are Velara. Plenty are not.
- Host. She organises the gatherings and does her best to make sure the Astraria attend.
- Negotiator. When a pride starts to fracture, the Crown steps in. That can mean cutting off an Astraria who is being divisive, or making the Velara and the male see reason.
Three Orbits — and the True Centre
From the male's point of view a pride is three orbits: Velara on the inside, then Lorena, then Astraria — each progressively more emotionally distant from him.
But that is only his view. In reality, the true orbits are around the Crown. More on that to come.
